Upcoming Belly Dance events in the Bay Area

For some the end of June is the beginning of the 'summer' holidays for kids /families but this summer I'm working as usual at the day job, and not taking any lengthy holidays (like last summer when Davina and I went to London for the Olympics ~though we never got any tickets for games but we went anyway!).

This year, I'm making sure my calendar is up to date with the upcoming belly dance events so I thought I would share the information with you all as well so you can get your calendar in order too.

August 3 & 4 2013: Carnival of Stars
Richmond Auditorium, Richmond, CA
Sat. 10am to 10pm & Sun. 10am to 8pm
Belly Dancing & SciFi/Comics collide. In addition to dance performances this event has costume contests and a raffle to raise money for future events. I have seen a picture of a lovely assiut dress that will be one of the raffle items.

Sunday, August 11, 2013: SF/BA MECDA's Swaportunity
At Lunatic Fringe on Murphy Ave in Sunnyvale, CA

Swap Shop and Socialize. There will be FREE mini-workshops provided throughout the afternoon. This is a fundraiser for the SF/BA MECDA chapter and their designated charity Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence

Angelica's has been undergoing an extensive remodel and will not be ready to host BAB, so the same great show is at another venue. CSJ studio is close to Downtown RWC, near restaurants, next door to Lobster Shack AND In & Out Burger. There will still be two stages with the same line up - just different names for the stages.

Festival Mission
The mission of Bay Area Belly is to provide a place to perform, network, watch and enjoy an afternoon in the company of other dancers, students of belly dance and other dance enthusiasts. This venue is central to the Bay Area in the Mid-Peninsula - what a great place to have a festival!

General admission $12.00. Dancer donation $5.00 at the door.

Hahbi Ru's performance at Rakkasah West 2013

On Sunday, March 17, 2013 Hahbi Ru performed on the Rakkasah West stage, in tribute to John Compton, and in reality for everyone that loved watching John and Hahbi Ru.

The tribute performance was a touching farewell to the joyous energy that was John Compton on stage and off.

Hahbi Ru Dance Ensemble arrived on stage to choruses of zagareets from the very back of the auditorium all the way up to the rafters. After two dances Malia invited those in the audience who have learned and taught the 'Cymbal Dance' to come on up and everyone danced together.

There were as many smiles as there were tears, and both together at that same time, as memories of first time seeing Hahbi Ru perform, memories of classes and workshops taken, and memories of seeing and talking with John flooded over the audience with waves of the joy, that are in essence John Compton.

I'm very happy that I was there for this wonderful shared experience with my fellow dancers at Rakkasah 2013.
